J&J accuses NTL member Monica Cooper of playing race card in talc trial

Johnson & Johnson, makers of a baby powder that may cause cancer, accuses National Trial Lawyers member Monica Cooper of the Lanier Law Firm of playing the “race card” in the latest talc trial in New Jersey, reports Forbes. Lanier is representing Richardo Rimondi, who believes that asbestos in J&J’s talc powder gave him mesothelioma. Lanier won a $4.69 billion verdict against J&J last year in a Missouri trial. According to Forbes, Cooper said J&J targeted African-Americans, Hispanics and overweight women with marketing Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder.

“They (J&J) knew corn starch could be a substitute (for talc), but it didn’t make as much money,” Cooper said. “If you’re going to be honest, you put a warning label on it and they didn’t.”

Defense attorney Morton Dubin accused Cooper, who is African-American, of playing the “race card,” by accusing J&J of marketing to certain demographics. Cooper says the evidence will show that J&J is responsible for her client’s mesothelioma.
